Occupying Main Street

Renovations on The Cairn have taken over Main Street as two parts of the project, requiring two very large pieces of equipment, are hard at work simultaneously. Drywall for the second floor teen center is being unloaded (the easy way), and the sprinkler company is digging up the sidewalk to install some kind of fancy water flow sprinkler thingy. Things are moving along, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Educational Support Coordinator

As a part of our mission to help the teens in our community “dream big” and look towards the future with hope and optimism, The Cairn plans to offer educational support for any middle – high school student who needs assistance. Our goal is to work with the Clark County schools to identify and support at-risk students by providing tutoring, homework assistance, and by teaching study skills.

To this end, The Cairn is looking for a volunteer leader to serve as our Educational Support Coordinator. The person in this position will have the opportunity to help develop an academic support program from the ground up, and will oversee a team of tutors to carry out this component of our mission. If you are passionate about supporting and building up the youth in our community and can commit 10-15 hours a week to this leadership role, we would love to hear from you!

Spring Forward!

Spring is in the air, and we couldn’t be more excited about it…because we are moving forward! Last week, the grant money we had been promised finally came through all the necessary channels, which means we can get back to work. And trust me, we did not waste any time. We have already demolished the previous rear-entry way, ripped up the concrete, and have begun construction of the back deck. This platform will offer some limited outdoor seating for the coffee house, and the new doorway we installed (left) will serve as the primary entrance for our second floor teen center. Demolition Men

We have a had volunteers in The Cairn all week doing some work on the building to get us one step closer to being open! Tomorrow (8am-12pm) we will be at it again, insulating the second floor ceiling, prepping some barn wood for finishing work, and doing whatever else needs to be done. While we’re at it, take a look back at how far we’ve come! This video was taken during one of our initial demolition days back in March of 2011:
