Our Name

cairn (n): \ kairn \ a pile of stones set up as a landmark or monument.

For thousands of years, people around the world have erected piles of stones – cairns – to mark the significance of specific locations. Ranging in size and function, cairns historically were erected as monuments to special events or victories, or as memorials to a loved one. In modern times, cairns are often erected to mark trails for hikers. Some cairns carry with them a tradition whereby hikers carry a stone up a mountain and place it on the cairn, making their mark and joining together with all who have gone before and all who will come after.

It is with this inspiration in mind that The Cairn was established. We are a faith-based, non-profit organization in Winchester, KY seeking to add value to our community and our world by encouraging people to join their stories together through relationships and service. At The Cairn:

  • we are established as a monument to what God has done and will continue to do in and through a willing community of servant-minded people.
  • we understand that life’s journey is made infinitely better when it is traveled with others; our hope is that we can be a “trail-marker” of sorts that points the way to fulfilling life by fostering relationship, communication, service, and creativity.
  • we desire for individuals to be a part of something bigger and greater than themselves by connecting, sharing, serving, with us, just as we seek to be a part of something greater than ourselves by expanding our impact into Winchester and around the world.
